New Barys 8X8 AFV Nears Service Entry

: May 22, 2018 - : 2:17 pm

The new Barys 8×8 armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) being developed for the Kazakhstan military by Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering (KPE) will soon enter military service. The Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan has been undertaking evaluation of the Barys 8X8 AFV over the last few months.

Barys stands for ‘Snow Leopard’ in the Kazakh language and is based on Africa based Paramount Group’s Mbombe 8 high mobility armoured vehicle family. According to company officials, “The vehicle per- formed exceptionally throughout the trials.”

To meet the stringent requirements demanded by the Kazakhstan armed forces, the Barys 8X8 AFV has been designed to accommodate a wide array of gun and rocket systems. As part of recently concluded winter trials, the main equipment of the Barys AFV, which is comprised of a Shipunov 2A42 30 mm automatic cannon having a range of more than 2000m and a remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS) 7.62mm machine gun, delivered excellent accuracy in day and night conditions.

The weapon systems have to perform reliably in temperature conditions of -45 degrees Celsius with a wind-chill factor of minus 60 degrees Celsius. The RCWS is manufactured by Kazakhstan Aselsan Engineering LLP, which is a joint venture with Turkish defence giant Aselsan.

The Barys 8X8 AFV will be manufactured by KPE at its armoured vehicle factory located in Astana, which is the largest in Central Asia with the capability to produce more than 200 armoured vehicles of various types per annum.

KPE is also continuing the ramp-up in production of the Arlan armoured vehicle, which is a version of Paramount Group’s Marauder armoured personnel carrier but one that has been substantial modified to meet the requirements of the Kazakhstan armed forces.

The Arlan APC is in operation with the Kazakh military, Ministry of Defence units, Special Forces units and various law enforcement agencies.
