Sierra Space Corporation, in collaboration with Japan Airlines Co., Ltd., Kanematsu Corporation, and Oita Prefecture, has announced the inclusion of MUFG Bank, Ltd. and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. in their partnership aimed at advancing the Dream Chaser space plane project.
The collaboration has been exploring numerous opportunities facilitated by the establishment of a horizontal spaceport, such as the landing of the space plane at Oita Airport, Kyushu Island, Japan as well as addressing associated legal and regulatory challenges, and developing an economic zone around the spaceport. The primary objective is to transform the Airport into an Asian hub for Sierra Space's Dream Chaser space plane.
The participation of MUFG Bank, Ltd. and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. is expected to accelerate the efforts to realise the use of Oita Airport as a horizontal spaceport. This enhanced collaboration is anticipated to boost Japan's space-related industry and foster new industrial and business opportunities through space utilisation.
Dream Chaser, a reusable lifting-body space plane developed by Sierra Space, was initially designed as a crewed vehicle. The Dream Chaser Space System, intended for human spaceflight, is set for production following the successful launch of the cargo version. This crewed variant will be capable of carrying up to seven passengers and cargo to and from low Earth orbit.
The project began in 2004 under SpaceDev, a company later acquired by Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) in 2008. In April 2021, Sierra Space Corporation (SSC) assumed control of the project, becoming an independent entity after spinning off from SNC.
The cargo version of Dream Chaser is designed to resupply the International Space Station with both pressurised and unpressurised cargo. It is intended for vertical launch using the Vulcan Centaur rocket and can autonomously land horizontally on conventional runways.
