The Malaysian Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has officially confirmed the appointment of Lieutenant General Datuk Haji Malek Razak bin Sulaiman as the 24th Chief of Defence Force (CDF), effective from 1 February 2026. This high-profile transition comes at a pivotal moment for the Southeast Asian nation as it seeks to modernise its military capabilities and navigate increasingly complex maritime security challenges in the Asia Pacific region. General Malek Razak, who previously served as the Commander of Army Field Command West, will be promoted to the rank of four-star General to assume the nation’s top military post.
The appointment follows the 633rd (Special) Armed Forces Council meeting held on 29 January 2026. The recommendation was subsequently granted royal assent by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, on 30 January 2026. This leadership change is viewed by regional analysts as a move to ensure stability within the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) following a period of administrative transition. Earlier in the year, the appointment of the previous candidate for the post was deferred to facilitate ongoing investigations into integrity-related allegations, during which time Royal Malaysian Navy Chief Admiral Tan Sri Zulhelmy Ithnain served as the acting CDF.
According to the official MINDEF media statement released on 31 January 2026, the government expressed full confidence that General Malek Razak’s extensive experience will fortify the MAF’s readiness against emerging national threats. The ministry emphasised that his leadership will focus on restoring and strengthening the "wibawa" (authority) of the armed forces through a command philosophy rooted in integrity and professionalism.
With a military career spanning nearly 40 years, General Malek Razak brings significant operational and academic depth to the role. He began his service in 1985 as an Overseas Cadet Officer at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom, and was commissioned into the Royal Malay Regiment as a Second Lieutenant on 11 December 1987. His early career saw him serving as a Platoon Commander in the 21st Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment before rising through various command and staff positions.
General Malek Razak is highly regarded for his academic credentials, holding a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King's College London, a Master of Social Science (Defence Studies) from the National University of Malaysia (UKM), and a Diploma in Strategic and Security Studies from the same institution. His prior role as Commander of Army Field Command West placed him at the forefront of land-based operational strategy, a background that will be vital as Malaysia integrates new technologies under its "Future Force" aspirations.
The transition arrives as Malaysia gears up for a significant procurement cycle. Under the 2026 National Budget, the Ministry of Defence has been allocated RM21.7 billion (approximately US$5.12 billion) to bolster its primary assets. Key upcoming acquisitions include 18 FA-50 light combat aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries, Medium Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Systems (MALE-UAS), and the commencement of the Multi-Role Support Ship (MRSS) project.
The Asia Pacific region continues to face heightened tensions, particularly regarding territorial disputes in the South China Sea. General Malek Razak’s appointment is expected to align with the Mid-Term Review of the Defence White Paper, which underscores the necessity of upgrading MAF assets to meet these geopolitical challenges. His leadership will be instrumental in maintaining Malaysia's momentum following its ASEAN chairmanship and in implementing the National Defence Strategic Plan 2026–2030.
The Malaysian government has recently doubled down on its anti-corruption stance within the military ecosystem. In a recent statement, Defence Minister Dato' Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin reaffirmed that "integrity, accountability, and clean governance remain the core pillars" of the military leadership. General Malek Razak is expected to lead a major overhaul of anti-bribery policies to maintain public trust in the nation's primary defence institution.
Reflecting on the weight of command during a recent leadership session at the Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College, General Malek Razak highlighted the importance of "people-centric leadership" and "mutual accountability" as essential components for achieving organisational excellence in operational settings.
