Nigeria’s National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) plans to purchase N-219 aircraft, two helicopters and hangar equipment from Indonesia’s state-owned aerospace company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) .
During a recent visit by the Indonesian Ambassador for Nigeria, Dr. Usra Hendra Harahap in Abuja, NASENI Chief Executive Prof. Mohammed Sani Haruna said that his agency had received the Nigerian government’s approval to acquire the know-how from Indonesia for the development of civil and military aircraft as well as other defense equipment.
“The Embassy also received an update of quotation of weapons and vehicles for the Federal Government of Nigeria with the estimated value US$57 million,” said Dr. Harahap. “The Embassy is also aware that NASENI intends to procure some products from PT. Dirgantara Indonesia such as Aircraft N-219, hangar equipment and two helicopters. In this regard, the embassy is seeking clarification [from] PTDl for the estimated value of the products.”
Indonesia’s PTDI has been developing the N-219 since 2004. After its first flight in 2017, the company is currently running a low-scale production and seeking additional funds to mass produce and market the aircraft. The N-219 is designed to be operated in semi-prepared runways and airstrips that are common in remote Indonesian regions.
The twin-engined, 19 passenger capacity aircraft is also still being actively developed in several other versions like maritime patrol, weather control as well as an amphibious version.
