The Asia-Pacific (ASPAC) region is on track to become the world’s most competitive aviation market in 2025, according to new analysis by travel data provider OAG. The region has already surpassed 2019’s total aviation capacity by 0.5% in 2024, demonstrating significant growth across both domestic and international sectors.
The report, titled Is Asia Pacific the World’s Most Competitive Aviation Market?, highlights that domestic markets have shown notable resilience, with capacity now 4.7% higher than pre-pandemic levels. This rebound underscores the essential role of domestic travel in the region’s aviation recovery.
In particular, China’s domestic capacity has risen by 14% compared to 2019, while India has seen a 13% increase. These countries, along with Japan and Indonesia, together account for more than 100 million domestic seats. However, Japan’s domestic market remains 4% below 2019 levels, with socio-economic factors hindering growth. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s recovery is slower, with capacity 17% behind pre-pandemic levels, partly due to ongoing supply chain challenges that have left 27% of the country’s aircraft grounded or under maintenance.
On the international front, the ASPAC region has reached 594.8 million seats, making it the second-largest international aviation market globally. Although this figure still falls short of 2019 levels, the region now accounts for one in every four international seats worldwide.
Among the leading airlines in terms of international seat capacity are Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and China Eastern. Singapore Airlines has seen a 14.1% increase in capacity compared to 2019, making it one of three Asia Pacific carriers in the top 10 for international capacity to surpass pre-pandemic levels. The other two carriers are Scoot (+13.8%) and EVA Airways (+4.5%).
Additionally, the report notes a decline in airfares in the region, driven by rapid capacity expansion and increased competition. In 17 of the 20 largest growth markets, average ticket prices have decreased, some by more than 20%. The route from Bangkok to Shanghai Pudong, for example, has seen a 71% reduction in fares year-on-year.
Mayur Patel, OAG’s Head of Asia Pacific, commented: “As the Asia Pacific region continues to expand, the synergy of robust domestic recovery, dynamic international growth, and competitive strategic pricing makes it the world’s most vibrant and competitive aviation market.”
