Ocius, an Australian maritime drone technology company, signed a contract to supply Bluebottle Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), according to the company’s press release on Monday (Nov. 28).

The AUD4.9 million (USD3.3 million) contract will see the company delivering five Bluebottle USVs to be used to develop unmanned surface and underwater technologies, and to provide RAN with a platform for maritime surveillance.

“Over five years as HNC it has been fantastic being involved with Ocius and seeing Australian technology at the forefront. Systems like Ocius Bluebottles are really important to our strategy,” said Rear Admiral Peter Quinn, RAN’s Head of Navy Capability (HNC) during the company’s annual general meeting on Thursday (Nov. 24).

“We have vast areas we need to patrol, and we have to and will be investing in uncrewed platforms that will be out there persistently conducting surveillance,” he added.

“This contract makes Ocius a Defence Prime; not a big one… but from little things big things grow,” said Ocius CEO, Robert Dane. “To be a long-lasting Defence Prime we need two things – innovative products and people.”

He further noted that with the Australian Border Force (ABF) in the last 15 months, four Bluebottle USVs equipped with electro-optical sensors, radars, and satellite communication had completed a combined unescorted voyage distance of almost 23,000 nautical miles at sea. These USVs were conducting maritime surveillance tasks along the coast of Western Australia.

Ocius Bluebottle USV is a seaborne autonomous data gathering and communication platform that uses solar, wind & wave energy as its power. It has a length of 6.8 meters with a maximum payload capacity of 600 kg.
