The strategic maritime corridor of the Gulf of Oman is seeing intensified bilateral cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and Pakistan. On 12 January 2026, Oman’s Maritime Security Center (MSC) hosted a high-level military delegation from Pakistan to address the escalating risk of asymmetric warfare. The visit focused on synchronising regional responses to the resurgence of water-borne improvised explosive devices (WBIEDs) and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) threatening global energy supply chains.
The discussions in Muscat targeted the proliferation of low-cost, high-impact technologies used by non-state actors. By sharing tactical intelligence, both nations aim to create a resilient maritime domain awareness framework essential for protecting routes connecting the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean. According to reports from the Oman News Agency and The Diplomatic Insight, this engagement follows a significant memorandum of understanding signed in late December 2025 regarding the exchange of "white shipping" data to improve the detection of suspicious activities.
From an Asia-Pacific perspective, the stability of these waters is a national security priority for major economies like China and Japan. Pakistan’s role as a security provider in the North Arabian Sea acts as a vital bridge for energy hubs. Any disruption caused by WBIEDs would result in immediate spikes in shipping costs for Asian cargo, impacting trade valued in the billions of US dollars. The partnership is reinforced by joint exercises such as the Thamar Al Tayyib and the upcoming AMAN-25, allowing the Royal Navy of Oman and the Pakistan Navy to test interoperability against modern maritime warfare challenges. This collaboration underscores a shift towards indigenous regional security solutions, ensuring the gateway to the Indian Ocean remains stable against evolving asymmetric threats.
