The South Asian aerospace sector is witnessing a significant shift in procurement dynamics as Pakistan nears several major export agreements for its indigenously produced military hardware. Leading this commercial offensive is the JF-17 Thunder multi-role fighter, with Islamabad currently finalising a landmark US$1.5 billion deal with Sudan and engaging in high-level procurement talks with Bangladesh. These developments represent a pivotal moment for the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), as it seeks to position itself as a primary provider of cost-effective, high-performance combat solutions for emerging markets across Africa and the Asia-Pacific.
The Sudanese package, valued at approximately US$1.5 billion, is reported to be a comprehensive defence solution. Sources indicate the deal includes 10 Karakoram-8 (K-8) light attack aircraft, over 200 unmanned aerial systems—ranging from reconnaissance platforms to loitering munitions—and advanced air defence systems. While the primary focus remains on the light attack and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) capabilities, there are strong indications that the agreement may also eventually encompass a squadron of the latest JF-17 Block III variants. This deal would provide the Sudanese military with its first significant modernisation in decades, offering a technology leap in precision strike and electronic warfare capabilities.
In reports published on 9 January 2026, Reuters and Al Jazeera highlighted that these negotiations signal a maturing export strategy for Pakistan. The original reports suggest that the Sudan deal might be supported by regional third-party financing, potentially from Saudi Arabia, which has recently deepened its own defence ties with Islamabad. This underscores a growing trend where Pakistan leverages its strategic partnerships to facilitate large-scale aerospace exports, effectively bypassing traditional Western or Russian financing hurdles.
Simultaneously, Pakistan has turned its focus toward the Asia-Pacific region, specifically targeting a revitalised relationship with Bangladesh. Following the visit of Air Vice Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan to Islamabad earlier this month, the two nations have officially confirmed "detailed discussions" regarding the potential procurement of the JF-17 Thunder. For Dhaka, the JF-17 represents an ideal platform for its "Forces Goal 2030" modernisation plan, providing a 4.5-generation capability at a fraction of the lifecycle cost of European or American competitors. The offer reportedly includes an accelerated delivery schedule for Super Mushshak trainer aircraft to facilitate a seamless transition for Bangladeshi pilots.
The JF-17 Block III, which features an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and compatibility with advanced beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles, has become the spearhead of Pakistan’s aerospace diplomacy. Its proven operational record, most recently cited during border skirmishes in May 2025, has boosted international confidence in the platform. With existing contracts in Azerbaijan and Libya already worth billions, the addition of Sudan and Bangladesh would cement the JF-17 as one of the most successful light-to-medium fighter exports in the current global market.
For the broader Asia-Pacific aerospace industry, Pakistan’s aggressive marketing of the JF-17 signals a new era of intra-regional cooperation. By offering a "complete ecosystem"—encompassing pilot training, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, and technology transfer—Pakistan is presenting itself as more than just a vendor. This strategy is particularly appealing to nations in Southeast Asia and Africa that are wary of the political conditionalities often attached to Western defence exports.
The industrial success of the JF-17 is rooted in the long-term collaboration between PAC Kamra and China's Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG). This partnership has allowed Pakistan to achieve over 60 percent domestic manufacturing for the airframe, ensuring high levels of technical sovereignty. As Islamabad continues to broaden its client base, the focus is shifting toward long-term sustainment and the integration of indigenous sub-systems, including software-defined radios and electronic warfare suites developed at the National Aerospace Science and Technology Park (NASTP).
The surge in aerospace orders is expected to provide a significant boost to Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves. Government officials have hinted that the current export trajectory, if sustained, could significantly reduce the country’s reliance on international lending institutions. By transforming from a regional operator to a global exporter of high-tech military hardware, Pakistan is leveraging its aerospace sector as a primary engine for economic stability and geopolitical influence.
