Philippine Air Force Receives Two T129B ATAK Helicopters

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has received the first delivery of two Turkey-made T129B ATAK attack helicopters. The helicopters were delivered with two Turkish Air Force’s A400M Atlas transport aircraft which landed on Clark Air Base, Manila on Tuesday (March 8).

As part of a PHP13.8 billion (about USD265 million) contract between the Philippines Department of National Defense (DND) and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) signed in 2020, The PAF will receive six T129B attack helicopters including support and training. The first batch of these was originally planned to be delivered by the end of 2021, but issues regarding the export license of their US-made engines have delayed their delivery date.

The PAF is now expecting to have the remaining four T129B attack helicopters delivered at a frequency of one batch per year until 2024.

TAI T129B ATAK is a twin turboshaft engine, tandem-seat, all-weather attack helicopter developed from AgustaWestland A129 Mangusta. Powered with two LHTEC CTS800-4A turboshafts, each delivering 1,014 kW (1,360 hp) of power, the rotorcraft is capable of reaching a maximum cruise speed of 281 km/h with a 537 km operational range. It is armed with an M197 triple-barrel 20 mm rotary cannon as standard and has four hardpoints under its stub wings for a multitude of armament, ranging from rockets, anti-tank/air to ground as well as air to air missiles.
