Philippine Airlines Orders up to 20 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has committed to acquire up to 20 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners in what the carrier describes as the largest widebody aircraft order in its history, reinforcing its long-haul growth strategy and eight-decade partnership with Boeing.

Announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, the agreement covers 15 firm aircraft and purchase rights for five additional 787-10s. The order remains subject to finalisation before it is added to Boeing's official order backlog.

The new aircraft will support Philippine Airlines' fleet modernisation programme and future expansion on medium- and long-haul routes, complementing its existing Boeing 777 fleet.
Lucio C. Tan III, President and Chief Operating Officer of PAL Holdings, said the investment reflected the airline's confidence in future passenger demand.

"This investment manifests our confidence in the future of Philippine Airlines and the continued growth of air travel," he said. "The Boeing 787-10 will strengthen our medium- and long-haul fleet, allowing us to provide an even better travel experience for our customers while improving operational efficiency and supporting our long-term sustainability goals."

Dreamliner Role

The Boeing 787-10 is the largest member of the Dreamliner family and is designed to carry between 300 and 375 passengers over distances of up to 7,500 nautical miles. The aircraft is intended for high-capacity regional services as well as longer international routes, offering airlines improved fuel efficiency and lower operating costs than the older-generation widebody aircraft it replaces. Boeing says the composite-intensive aircraft consumes around 25% less fuel than previous-generation aircraft in the same category.

Stephanie Pope, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said the agreement marked another chapter in the relationship between the manufacturer and the Philippine flag carrier.

Network Growth

Philippine Airlines currently operates 10 Boeing 777-300ERs alongside Airbus A350 and A330 aircraft. The airline introduced its first Airbus A350-1000 in late 2025 and has been expanding services to North America, including additional flights to Los Angeles and a new non-stop route between Manila and Chicago. The carrier serves 29 domestic and 40 international destinations through its hubs in Manila and Cebu.

The addition of the Boeing 787-10 will provide the airline with additional capacity to support fleet renewal and network expansion while strengthening its long-haul operations as demand for international travel continues to recover.
