The Philippine Navy commissioned its advanced vessel, the BRP Diego Silang, marking a milestone in its efforts to strengthen maritime defences in the West Philippine Sea.
The ship was placed into service at Naval Operating Base–Subic in Zambales in a ceremony led by Defense Acquisitions chief Salvador Melchor Mison Jr.
The Navy said the frigate will immediately support maritime patrols and joint activities aimed at improving the Armed Forces’ deterrence capability.
In his remarks, Mison said the BRP Diego Silang marks continued progress in the military’s modernization program and represents another step in strengthening the country’s defense posture.
“Diego Silang sends a clear message that the Philippines will continue to invest in programs that strengthen maritime domain awareness, enhance deterrence, and improve our ability to uphold the rule of law,” he said.
He added that the warship “will sail the seas carrying the hopes, the resolve, and the unwavering commitment of the Filipino people.”
The Diego Silang, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, arrived in the country in September from South Korea.
Named for a Filipino revolutionary hero, the Diego Silang measures 118 metres in length and is bristling with anti-air and anti-submarine weaponry – capabilities the Philippines has long sought.
Together with another ship, the BRP Miguel Malvar, delivered earlier this year, the Diego Silang forms the centrepiece of a 28 billion peso (US $483 million) deal with South Korea’s HD Hyundai, signed in December 2021.
In 2022, when President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr took office, the navy’s Offshore Combat Force counted just nine principal ships in its fleet, none of them a match for the modern fleets deployed by Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore – or China.
Today, the force has four guided-missile frigates, with six Rajah Sulayman-class offshore patrol vessels, also being built by HD Hyundai, expected by 2028.
