The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reminded Beijing of an incident years back when they 'blew up' a Chinese construction attempt in Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
Rear Adm. Roy Vincent Trinidad, AFP spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, issued the warning after the discovery of structures—possibly made of wood or concrete—inside the lagoon at Scarborough Shoal, known as Huangyan Island in China and Panatag Shoal in the Philippines.
“We have received reports of certain structures underwater which we are verifying,” Trinidad told reporters.
“But we have to understand that in the past, in 1997, there was an attempt to erect a steel structure by the Chinese Communist Party which was blown up by our Philippine Navy forces.”
An MDA flight on Monday, October 13, revealed what appeared to be wooden structures in parts of Bajo de Masinloc, located 124 nautical miles off Masinloc, Zambales, where Beijing reportedly plans to build a “national nature reserve.”
While reports noted concrete blocks inside the shoal, later identified as remnants from when Bajo de Masinloc served as a bombing range for U.S. and Philippine forces before tensions rose in the area, Trinidad said this should serve as a reminder for the People’s Republic of China not to build new structures,
“Nevertheless, we are checking the latest report that these structures were noticed and spotted. They could be remnants of the old structures that were there on Bajo de Masinloc,” Trinidad said.
Scarborough Shoal is one of several contested features in the South China Sea, a vital waterway where overlapping territorial claims by China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and others have fuelled decades of maritime tensions.
The shoal has remained a flashpoint between Manila and Beijing since China seized control of the shoal in 2012 following a naval stand-off.
