Italian airframer Piaggio Aerospace, which is displaying an Avanti EVO at the ongoing airshow, is bullish on their prospects in the region, with company officials pointing out that the airframer’s presence is steadily growing in the SEA region.
“Our business aviation flagship product P.180, successfully operated in Indonesia and Bangladesh since several years, entered into service with its latest version, the Avanti EVO, also in Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore last year, bringing the current fleet to 8 aircraft,” Vincenzo Nicastro, Extraordinary Receiver of Piaggio Aerospace, tells Daily News.
The airframer together with local partner APL, has just supported the opening of a new maintenance service centre in Kuala Lumpur (Subang), adding to its other centre in Singapore (Seletar). Legacy P.180s are also in operation in China, India and Australia. Piaggio Aerospace is attending the ongoing airshow as its first public event after it went under receivership.
Piaggio Aerospace is also the manufacturer of the P.1HH HammerHead, whose development and certification process, Nicastro says the company is ready to finalize in order to commercialize it throughout the world. Commenting on the Malaysian requirement for such platforms, he says, “We are informed about the RFI issued by the Royal Malaysian Air Force last month: we are now assessing if this may represent an opportunity for us and act accordingly.”
Also being promoted at Langkawi, is the company’s manned Multirole Patrol Aircraft (MPA), intended for aerial surveillance missions as well as ground, coastal and marine patrols. The light twin turboprop aircraft is an evolution and development of the P.180 for Special Mission applications. The MPA has a new aerodynamic configuration, greater wing extension and a higher payload capacity and several perspective customers from all over the world have been expressing their interest in this MPA,” Nicastro adds.
