Pindad Launches Military Vehicle Design Competition (MVDC) 2022

PT Pindad, the Indonesian state-owned land systems company, has launched its second annual Military Vehicle Design Competition (MVDC) for Indonesian nationals. The registration is open from 18 to 29 July 2022.

The theme for this year’s MVDC is “Electric Vehicle Design To Support Defense and Security” and is split into two categories: professional and student. The professional category is further divided into three sub-categories: automotive designer, automotive industry, and automotive enthusiast. The student category is split into two sub-categories: college and high school (or equivalent) students.

The competition started in 2020 in the form of “Military Creative Fest 2020” to gather modification ideas for Pindad’s Komodo 4×4 tactical vehicle and its SS2 assault rifle. In 2021, it transformed into open competition for new military vehicle designs with entrants from both industry professionals and students.

Pindad’s MVDC 2021 attracted 524 entrants of which 10 from each category were selected for the final round. According to Pindad, the assessment is carried out objectively based on the function of the vehicle design, the logic of the vehicle design, and the aesthetics offered in the design as well as the presentation of the participants in the design presentation. Three winners from both categories were then announced in September 2021.

While there was no immediate follow-up regarding the winning designs, they are likely will be used as the basis for Pindad’s future products.

Pindad is expecting that this year’s MVDC will garner more public interest, especially considering the Indonesian government’s program to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles as part of its net-zero emission target in 2060.
