Pratt & Whitney is showcasing new MRO techniques and processes at the ongoing airshow, that were developed from Singapore for the global market. “Pratt & Whitney is executing strongly on our digital transformation plan globally and in the region, against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving aviation industry. Our investments in advanced technologies are driven by our commitment to going beyond for our customers to anticipate tomorrow’s needs. Coupled with a firm belief in empowering our teams, it has given our business the platform to innovate from within and launch many industry-first technologies for the MRO sector from Singapore – targeted at the global market,” said Brendon McWilliam, executive director, Aftermarket Operations. Asia-Pacific.
Amongst, the game-changing innovations developed from Singapore was the developed of a fully automated ultrasonic measurement system by Singapore based blade and vane repair specialist, Turbine Overhaul Services. the automated ultrasonic measurement system is a first in Pratt and Whitney’s global operations and introduced an advanced robotic inspection of airfoil wall thickness to produce fast and reliable inspections. The new systems free up vital inspector hours, so that they can perform more critical visual inspection tasks.
Another innovation developed at Turbine Overhaul Services was the industry’s first powder titanium turbine blades with titanium powder cladding using automated fiber optic. While laser cladding is a known technology in the aerospace sector, this newly developed process for the industry can adjust to incoming repair blades variation to enable predictable and dimensionally consistent build up that helps downstream process automation. The new process replaces the hot process of welding with a cool laser cladding process and results in zero welding rework during repair.
In another industry first, Component Aerospace Singapore has introduced an automated fixture system using 12-armed robots to replace manual fixtures for tube repair. The use of pioneering robotic technologies in the MRO sector is aimed at improving productivity in various processes.
Pratt & Whitney Component Solutions, is adopting a fully automated robotic loading process that incorporates a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine together with a Collaborative Robot (COBOT), enabling 24/7 operations without human supervision.
Turbine Overhaul Services has also integrated an AI-based proprietary Piece Part Inspection (PPI) technology that reduced turnaround time for crucial visual inspections of its PW2000, PW4000 and V2500 engines designed to improve quality and repeatability.
