The United States Army has officially transitioned its next-generation long-range precision fire capability from the testing range to the battlefield. During the opening salvos of Operation Epic Fury on 28 February 2026, the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) made its highly anticipated combat debut. Launched from the mobile M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), the missile targeted high-value Iranian military infrastructure, including command centers and air defence nodes. This operational employment confirms that the successor to the ageing Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is now a proven asset within the American arsenal.
Initial reports and visual evidence released by United States Central Command (CENTCOM) depict the slimmer, elongated profile of the PrSM departing its launch pod. Unlike the legacy ATACMS which carries a single missile per pod, the PrSM allows for two missiles per launcher, effectively doubling the firepower of a single HIMARS unit. The baseline Increment 1 variant used in these strikes offers a range exceeding 500 kilometres, a substantial increase over the 300-kilometre limit of its predecessor. This extended reach provides commanders with the ability to strike deep into contested environments while keeping launch platforms safely outside the immediate engagement zone of enemy short-range defences.
The combat deployment was first highlighted by international outlets, following the release of a CENTCOM video montage. Analysts suggest that the timing of this debut serves as a strategic signal not only in the Middle East but also across the Asia Pacific. General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, noted during a Pentagon briefing on 2 March 2026 that initial strikes were supported by space and cyber effects to degrade enemy sensor networks. This integrated approach allowed the joint force to strike over 1,000 targets within the first 24 hours of the campaign.
For observers in the Indo-Pacific, the successful use of PrSM carries immense weight regarding the regional security architecture. The missile is central to the American strategy of deterring potential conflict in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. US plans to deploy upgraded missile launchers to the Philippines were discussed as recently as 17 February 2026, aiming to preserve freedom of navigation. While Beijing often views such deployments as provocative, Washington maintains these capabilities are necessary to counter anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) strategies. The PrSM provides a land-based solution to hold maritime targets at risk from the first island chain.
The mission in the Middle East utilised the standard land-attack version, but the US Army is already accelerating future variants. Increment 2 is being designed specifically as an anti-ship ballistic missile, while Increment 4 aims for a range of 1,000 kilometres using ramjet technology. Lockheed Martin received a full-rate production contract in April 2025, ensuring a steady supply of these munitions as global tensions persist. Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM Commander, stated that the joint forces are answering the call with bold action, underscoring the shift toward high-velocity, long-range engagements that define modern peer-level competition.
