PT Len Industri (Persero) the parent of Holding DEFEND ID it working to complete a project to delivery 13 Ground-Controlled Interception (GCI) Radars to the Indonesian Air Force. Len is collaborating with the French firm Thales to fulfill the order for 13 GCI radars placed by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence in June 2023. According to Len, the GCI Radar is one of the important parts of Government to Government (G-to-G) cooperation between the Indonesian government and the French government. "The procurement of 13 GCI radars is PT Len Industri's contribution in supporting the TNI AU's defense equipment modernization and replacement program. This GCI Radar will not only improve our air defense capabilities, but will also encourage the growth of the national defense industry,” President Director of PT Len Industri (Persero), Bobby Rasyidin had stated earlier. The GCI radar is the longest range radar ever purchased by Indonesia.
Thales is supplying the Ground Master 400 Alpha long-range air surveillance radars and the associated Command and Control system (SkyView) to PT Len. With a range of up to 450 km, the new Thales radars produced by Len, will have a range of up to 450 km and be capable of detecting threats at long range and low altitude, in addition to providing superior situational awareness. It features a digital radar architecture allowing it to remain resilient to new threats, cyber-attacks and electronic warfare tactics.
The new GCI radars are a component of Indonesia’s plans to build Network Centric Warfare (NCW) capability. This contract will span the next few years with Thales building the radars and Command and Control solution and PT Len constructing the radar stations, providing the installation and integration of the systems including managing civil works for the programme, supported by Thales. PT Len will manufacture certain components of the radars locally, building local indigenous capabilities, contributing towards Indonesia’s strengthening of local defence industry. PT Len and Thales had also announced a strategic collaboration in November 2022 the creation of a joint-venture (JV) that will start with local Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities for radars in service with the Indonesian Air Force, which were projected to begin operations in early 2024. PT Len and Thales had earlier partnered to produce Ground Master 403 (GM403) GCI radars for the Indonesian military.
