PT Lundin Launches Trimaran Fast Missile Craft For Indonesian Navy

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Aug 22, 2021 - : 12:28 am

PT Lundin Industry Invest (PT Lundin), an Indonesian private shipbuilding company, on Saturday launched KRI Golok (688) for the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) in Banyuwangi, East Java. The ship will be formally inducted into the navy’s fleet in October this year.

The new ship is meant to replace KRI Klewang (625), also built by PT Lundin, which was destroyed in a fire about a month after it was launched almost exactly nine year ago on Aug. 30, 2012.

Like its predecessor, the new KRI Golok (688) is a three-hulled ship (trimaran) that was designed according to low-observability (“stealth”) principles and built with radar absorbent materials. This makes KRI Golok the second Indonesian Navy fast missile craft in which low-observability is one of its main features.

“This is a type of fast missile ship that has high speed [and] will later be equipped with missiles,” said Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff, Admiral Yudo Margono, who attended the launch. “It is built with carbon composite material so that it has different advantages and characteristics compared to ships made of aluminum or iron.”

“This is a new type of ship made in Indonesia,” said Admiral Margono, referring to the ship’s unique features. “If it is good, we will build [more of this] again and we will also propose to the Ministry of Defense to build [more of] this type of ship,”.

Following its launch, the new ship will be fitted with weapons, sensors and other related electronics and will go through several tests before being formally accepted by TNI-AL in October this year.

KRI Golok (688) is a 62.53 meters long, has a 16-meter-beam, and has a height of 18.7 meters from the waterline to the top of its mast structure. It has a displacement of 245 tonnes and, due to its trimaran construction and carbon composite materials, has a maximum draft of only 1.2 meters. This makes it capable of operating in the coastal waters to the open seas.

Powered with four 1800 HP MAN V12 diesel engines driving four MJP 550 waterjets, the ship is able to reach a maximum speed in excess of 28 knots and has a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles under its cruising speed of 16 knots. With an accommodation for 30 personnel, the ship is projected to be armed with either two or four anti-ship missiles in the similar size and weight class as the MM-40 Exocet or RBS-15. It will also be armed with a 40 mm naval gun inside a special housing on top of its superstructure and either a short range anti-aircraft missile or a Close In Weapon System (CIWS) to defend itself from aerial attacks.

According to the Indonesian Navy’s naming convention, the names of Indonesia’s traditional weapons will be given to the fast missile ship’s class. KRI Golok (688) is named after a medium sized broad blade that is still used as both an agricultural tool and weapon, the latter especially in the Indonesian traditional martial arts of “pencak silat”.

PT Lundin Industry Invest and its trade name of North Sea Boats, is an established private shipbuilding company with its headquarter located in Banyuwangi, East Java. The company recently successfully launched and tested the “Combat Boat” for the Indonesian Army. The boat is projected to be produced in numbers some time next year. The company has also exported its products to several other countries in the South East Asia region and beyond.

The Indonesian Navy in 2014 announced that it had plans to buy four of the Klewang / Golok-class trimaran fast missile craft. It is not known if the plan is still being pursued.
