PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and Dassault Aviation have inaugurated the Dassault Aviation-PTDI Design Office on the fourth floor of PTDI’s Technology Directorate building in Bandung. The event was attended by the Director General of Defence Potential at the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, Major General Piek Budyakto, CEO of PT Dassault Aviation Indonesia, Jérôme Puech, PTDI’s Director of Commercial Technology & Development, Moh Arif Faisal, and representatives from both companies.
The establishment of the Design Office is part of Indonesia’s Rafale fighter jet procurement and industrialisation programme. It follows the phased contract signing for 42 Rafale aircraft by the Ministry of Defence in September 2022, August 2023, and January 2024. The office will support PTDI in areas such as Computer-Based Training (CBT) for the Rafale system, project management, industrialisation, and weapons system integration in line with Dassault Aviation’s standards.
The facility consists of two key areas. The CBT facility employs interactive diagrams and real-time 3D graphics to enhance training on Rafale systems for crew members and technicians. Meanwhile, the Weapon Integration Laboratory is intended to strengthen PTDI’s capabilities in integrating weapon systems into fighter aircraft.
Through this partnership, PTDI will also gain access to Electronic Warfare (EW) technology, which plays a critical role in modern defence operations. This system allows aircraft like the Rafale to detect, disrupt, and counter electronic threats, improving survivability in combat. The transfer of EW technology is expected to support Indonesia’s efforts to develop its own electronic warfare capabilities and bolster the country’s defence industry.
In addition to the Offset and Transfer of Technology (ToT) commitments, PTDI will take part in the Engineering Work Package (EWP), which includes setting up a Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility at PTDI for domestic maintenance of fighter aircraft. The Production Work Package (PWP) will focus on manufacturing composite-based components.
PTDI’s Director of Commercial Technology & Development, Moh. Arif Faisal, stated,
"We hope that the collaboration between PTDI and Dassault Aviation not only fulfils the Offset and ToT obligations but also expands into business-to-business cooperation in engineering and manufacturing. This is a tangible commitment from Dassault Aviation to support the growth of Indonesia’s aerospace and defence industry."
Beyond the Rafale programme, Dassault Aviation will also assist PTDI in securing European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for the N219 aircraft. This certification is expected to facilitate the N219’s global market expansion, particularly in Europe and other regions that adhere to EASA standards. Dassault Aviation will provide support in compliance engineering, safety assessment, flight test preparation, and certification capability development, reinforcing its role in Indonesia’s aerospace sector beyond defence.
