PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) is showcasing not only its aircraft products at the ongoing Indo Defence, but also its existing capabilities in weapon systems, particularly in the area of rockets and rocket integration. Speaking to GBP Daily News, Moh Arif Faisal, Director of Commerce, Technology & Development at PTDI said the Indonesian airframer is reinforcing its longstanding partnership with FZ Thales Belgium – part of the Thales Group, with a renewed emphasis on optimizing the company’s production facilities located in Tasikmalaya.
PTDI has held a production license from FZ Thales Belgium since 1982, to manufacture and assemble rocket systems and their associated firing control systems. PTDI currently has a production capacity of up to 10,000 rocket units and 5,000 warheads per year, including their integration and firing control systems. “This reinforcement is not a shift in business focus, but a strategic enhancement of PTDI’s role in the national defense ecosystem,” Faisal stated, adding, “PTDI is entering a new strategic phase. Rather than just producing, but expanding into advanced capabilities, including weapon systems–rocket and warhead manufacturing.”
As the only aircraft manufacturer in Southeast Asia, PTDI is also uniquely positioned to support the modernization of Indonesia’s defense posture, through both advanced aerospace platforms and integrated weapon systems. Also being showcased at the ongoing show are PTDI’s special mission platforms (CN235 Anti-Submarine Warfare, CN235 Fire Fighting, Bell 412 Anti-Submarine Warfare),NC212i multirole aircraft and an N219 utility aircraft, along with the N219 Cockpit Demonstrator. It is also showcasing a MALE UAV.
“PTDI is entering a new strategic phase. Rather than just producing, but expanding into advanced capabilities, including weapon systems–rocket and warhead manufacturing.” Moh Arif Faisal, Director of Commerce, Technology & Development at PTDI.
In January 2025 PTDI and Embraer have agreed to enhance operational readiness of the Indonesian Air Force’s Super Tucano fleet. This aircraft is a crucial asset for counter-insurgency (COIN), border patrol, and tactical strike missions, with proven performance in close air support and reconnaissance. To this matter, PTDI is appointed as the official Spares Acquisition Center for the Indonesian fleet. “Additionally, the agreement opens pathways to explore deeper local capabilities for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and aircraft modification–solidifying PTDI’s position as a strategic defense partner,” Faisal states.
He adds that with the full policy support from Indonesia’s National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), PTDI is developing the N219 Amphibious variant, which has been designated as part of Indonesia’s National Strategic Programmes. More than an aviation project, this initiative supports economic transformation and inter-island connectivity across Indonesia’s archipelagic regions. “The program carries strong market potential, with projections of 54 aircraft needed in the next 10 years.”
PTDI has also secured a Letter of Intent for 25 units of the N219 from a private Chinese entity—marking the airframer’s first penetration into non-traditional export markets. Domestically, the N219 basic variant is also being prioritized by Bappenas to serve accessibility and connectivity goals, with the Riau Islands set as a pilot project area.
