In a move to bolster European defence capabilities, Quantum Systems and Airbus Defence and Space have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the ongoing Paris Airshow, deepening their strategic cooperation in the field of AI-enabled aerial reconnaissance and autonomous systems.
The agreement underscores a shared ambition to strengthen the sovereignty and technological independence of Europe's defence sector, particularly in light of growing geopolitical uncertainties and rapidly evolving innovation cycles. The two companies will collaborate to develop scalable, interoperable systems designed for immediate operational deployment, with a focus on integrating tactical aerial reconnaissance assets into modern command-and-control environments.
"At its core, this partnership is about ensuring Europe's sovereignty in AI-supported mission systems and crewed-uncrewed teaming," said Michael Schöllhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. "Together with Quantum Systems, we are embracing a 'software-first' approach-enabling military missions to be carried out more efficiently and effectively, while maintaining system adaptability."
Unlike competitors with closed system architectures, Airbus and Quantum Systems are championing openness and transparency. Their joint solutions will feature open interfaces, giving European users full control over technology, data, and future development-a key differentiator aimed at enhancing operational flexibility and long-term sustainability.
The integration of Quantum Systems' MOSAIC architecture with the Airbus Combat Cloud will form the backbone of a layered reconnaissance network-from high-altitude platforms to tactical edge systems on the battlefield. The initiative reflects battlefield lessons drawn from Ukraine, where adaptability, real-time data integration, and rapid deployment have become mission-critical. Quantum Systems has an R&D and manufacturing presence in Ukraine, providing first-hand insight into contemporary combat challenges.
"This partnership sends a strong signal for the European defence industry," said Florian Seibel, co-CEO and co-founder of Quantum Systems. "Together with Airbus, we are building a networked, autonomous, and sovereign ecosystem for unmanned systems-operational, interoperable, and open to partners."
The cooperation will extend across Airbus' 'Air Power' and 'Connected Intelligence' business units, combining the agility and innovation of Quantum Systems with Airbus' scale and international reach. The alliance also aims to jointly advance EU-wide initiatives in open digital battlefields, simulation environments, and future-ready mission systems.
The announcement adds weight to a Paris Airshow already buzzing with developments in unmanned and AI-enabled defence technologies, further positioning Europe as a serious contender in next-generation military innovation.
