In a significant move to strengthen Taiwan’s asymmetric defence capabilities against regional threats, Raytheon Co. has been awarded a US$698.9 million contract to produce National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) fire units. The deal, facilitating a key Foreign Military Sales (FMS) requirement, underscores the deepening military interoperability between Taipei and Washington amidst an increasingly complex security environment in the Asia-Pacific.

The contract will see Raytheon’s Tewksbury facility in Massachusetts spearhead the production, with work expected to conclude by 28 February 2031. As a combat-proven medium-range air defence solution, NASAMS is designed to identify, engage, and destroy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). For Taiwan, the acquisition represents a critical upgrade to its multi-layered air defence network, offering a highly mobile and networked "porcupine" capability intended to deter coercive military pressure from the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The announcement was officially released by the US Department of War this week, confirming that the Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, will serve as the contracting activity. The full contract value of $698,948,760 has been obligated from Fiscal Year 2026 Foreign Military Sales funds designated for Taiwan. This procurement aligns with Taipei’s broader defence modernisation strategy, which has seen the island nation increase its defence budget to approximately NT$606.8 billion (US$19 billion) in recent years to address the widening cross-strait military imbalance.

Industry analysts view the delivery of NASAMS as a pivotal development for the region's security architecture. Unlike traditional static defence systems, NASAMS’ distributed architecture allows for high survivability against saturation attacks—a key concern for Taiwanese planners anticipating potential missile barrages. The system acts as a bridge between short-range point defence systems, such as the Stinger, and long-range strategic assets like the Patriot III, creating a more resilient and overlapping defensive shield across the Taiwan Strait.

The procurement also signals a sustained commitment from the United States to ensure Taiwan maintains a sufficient self-defence capability, consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act. By integrating NASAMS, Taiwan joins a user group of over a dozen nations, including Australia and Indonesia, further enhancing potential opportunities for technical cooperation and shared operational doctrines within the Indo-Pacific theatre.
