Regional Security Drives Momentum for DSA & NATSEC Asia 2026

Our Bureau - : Feb 4, 2026 - : 11:52 pm

Amidst a backdrop of intensifying geopolitical rivalries and a concerted push for regional self-reliance, the upcoming Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security (NATSEC) Asia 2026 exhibitions are witnessing unprecedented early demand. Organisers have confirmed that over 80 per cent of the exhibition space at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) has already been secured, signaling a robust recovery and expansion for the Asia Pacific defence sector. The event, scheduled for 20–23 April 2026, is poised to host more than 1,300 companies from 60 nations, reflecting the strategic weight of the Indo-Pacific market in the current global climate.

The surge in participation is inextricably linked to Malaysia’s strategic recalibration of its national security priorities. In January 2026, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin outlined eight primary focus areas for the year, including the management of grey zone tactics in the South China Sea and the official launch of the National Defence Industry Policy (DIPN). This policy aims to transition Malaysia from a consumer of foreign hardware to a self-sustaining contributor within the regional supply chain. As regional powers like Singapore and Indonesia also increase their procurement of advanced assets—ranging from F-35 fighter jets to medium tanks—DSA 2026 has emerged as the primary gateway for international primes to engage with ASEAN decision-makers.

The momentum for the 2026 edition was further solidified during a high-profile contract handover ceremony held in Bangkok on 11 November 2025, as reported by official press releases and mainstream outlets such as PR Newswire. During the event, seven major international entities, including Beretta Defense Technologies and MBDA, formalised their participation. Chief of Navy, Admiral Tan Sri (Dr) Zulhelmy bin Ithnain, witnessed the signings, underscores the high-level military backing that defines the biennial showcase.

Technological innovation remains the cornerstone of the 2026 agenda, with several new dedicated segments designed to address modern unconventional threats. The inaugural CBRNE Arena will provide a specialised platform for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives solutions, while a new Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR) segment reflects the growing role of military forces in regional climate resilience. Additionally, the DSA & NATSEC Asia Lab will focus on empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups, facilitating the integration of disruptive technologies like AI and autonomous systems into traditional defence frameworks.

Industry leaders have emphasised that the event transcends mere procurement, serving as a critical forum for defence diplomacy. During his 2026 New Year Address, Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin stated, “The first priority is to maintain the momentum of achievements and initiatives from last year’s ASEAN chairmanship,” highlighting that Malaysia views these exhibitions as tools for fostering interoperability amongst regional partners. This sentiment is echoed by international participants who see the show as a vital nexus for navigating the complexities of the Asia Pacific security landscape, where total airline net profits are forecast to reach US$41 billion (RM173.8 billion) by 2026, necessitating enhanced protection of regional air and sea lanes.
