Rheinmetall Defence Australia has expanded its regional maintenance capabilities in the Northern Territory and Queensland, strengthening its support for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
The company has introduced Medium Heavy Capability (MHC) Introduction and Maintenance training in collaboration with partner RGM Maintenance. Joern Buelter, General Manager Logistic Vehicles at Rheinmetall Defence Australia, said the program ensures RGM’s certification standards align with those of Australian Army personnel at Robertson Barracks in the Northern Territory, specifically for Rheinmetall MAN vehicles across the HX Truck fleet.
“The partnership reflects the strong commitment to regional maintenance capability development as outlined in the recent Defence Strategy Review (DSR) to force posture in the north of Australia," Mr Buelter said.
The growth of the fleet in Northern Territory and Northern Queensland has led Rheinmetall to deliver original equipment manufacturer (OEM) HX Logistic Vehicle maintenance training to RGM Maintenance staff in Darwin, Townsville and Rockhampton. According to Mr Buelter, this enhances the sustainment capability across northern Australia.
RGM Maintenance first partnered with Rheinmetall in 2022, aiming to support regional industrial growth by creating secure jobs, providing training opportunities and developing sovereign industrial capability. Mr Buelter noted that RGM is currently the only trade repair organisation to have received this certification and serves as Rheinmetall’s OEM repairer of choice in the region.
“This training reinforces the enduring partnership between Rheinmetall and RGM Maintenance to successfully sustain the HX vehicles in-region,” he said.
Rheinmetall also maintains support operations in Townsville, Rockhampton, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia, in addition to its main maintenance base at the Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence in Ipswich, Queensland.
“Our head office maintenance bases in Ipswich at our Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence ensure the needs of Australia and its allies are well served," Mr Buelter added.
Earlier this year, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles Australia marked the Final Acceptance of the LAND 121 3B/5B program, completing the delivery of over 3,000 HX Trucks and 3,000 modules on time and on budget.
The HX truck, a key logistics platform for the Australian Army, features a six-cylinder, in-line diesel engine and is capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -32°C to +49°C. With a gross vehicle weight exceeding 41,000 kilograms, the HX can traverse water depths of over 1.2 metres. Its modular capabilities include an Integrated and Automated Load Handling System, Crane, Container Carrier, Recovery, Tractor, Tanker, Tipper, System Carrier and Artillery System.
