Malaysia’s armed force, which are preparing for the future battlefield, provided an insight into their future plans at LIMA 23.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF) CAP 55 Strategic Plan is in its first phase, which will run till 2030. The first phase CAP 55 is a 10-year programme The second phase will run from 2031-2045 and the final phase from 2046 to 2055 will again run for 10 years. At the end of CAP 55, the RMAF will evolve into a credible and ‘Full Spectrum’ Air Force.

The RMAF is currently developing its capability to respond with the application of force (Detect, Deter and Deny/Defeat) in conducting multi-domain operations through ready, responsive and resilient airpower. CAP 55 envisages that the RMAF will be able to operate simultaneously in two theatres of conflict.

In the first phase of CAP 55, the RMAF is focussing on its maritime role due to the existing geostrategic environment. PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has already completed the upgrade of three CN235 MSA (Maritime Surveillance Aircraft) for the RMAF. The RMAF is also soon expected to conclude a contract two Leonardo ATR72MP maritime patrol aircraft as well.

In the second and third phases of CAP 55, which begin in 2031 and 2046 respectively, the RMAF will focus on enhancing its air mobility and tactical capability, special forces operations missions and airborne early warning and control systems.

Over the course of CAP 55, the RMAF will have inducted new maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), Medium Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Systems (MALE UAS), Fighter Lead-In-Trainer (LCA/FLIT), new Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA), new helicopters and training aircraft, along with new radars and air defence systems.
