The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has initiated a salvage operation and a formal board of inquiry following an emergency water landing involving a Leonardo Super Lynx MK100 helicopter. The incident occurred on 31 December 2025 at approximately 10:50 pm in the waters off Pantai Klebang, Melaka. The aircraft was participating in a night flight demonstration to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Malaysian Army’s elite special forces, the Grup Gerak Khas (GGK).

All four aircrew members on board were successfully rescued and transported to Melaka Hospital. Official statements from the RMN confirmed that the personnel are in stable condition and remain under medical observation. The navy has urged the public to refrain from circulating video footage of the ditching to preserve the integrity of the ongoing technical investigation.

The RMN currently maintains a fleet of six Super Lynx helicopters, which reached a 10,000-flight-hour milestone in 2018. While the 501 Squadron was recently awarded Approved Maintenance Organisation (AMO) certification by the Directorate General Technical Airworthiness (DGTA) in 2023, the physical age of the airframes remains a critical factor for the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).

For Malaysia, the requirement for a Super Lynx replacement is valued at several hundred million ringgit (approximately US$100 million to US$200 million depending on unit count and specifications). Defence analysts suggest that the RMN's "15 to 5" transformation programme will likely accelerate the procurement of new ASW-capable helicopters to fill the gap left by the ageing Lynx fleet.

Operational Impact and Investigation

The Board of Inquiry is expected to focus on potential mechanical failure or environmental factors during the night-time demonstration flight. Salvage teams are currently working to recover the airframe from the shallow waters off Klebang to facilitate a detailed forensic analysis by the DGTA. The loss of an airframe, even temporarily, places additional strain on the RMN’s remaining rotorcraft inventory as it continues to support border security and counter-piracy operations in the Strait of Malacca and the Sulu Sea.
