ROK Army to Enhance Drone Warfare Capabilities

Our Bureau - : Oct 22, 2025 - : 1:09 am

The Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) is ramping up efforts to enhance its drone offensive capabilities and countermeasures amid growing regional concerns.

At the ongoing ADEX 2025, Young Jun Lee of the ROK Army told GBP Daily News that the service is developing technology both for drone transport as well as for capture. This, he said, would greatly benefit the ROKA.

The transport drone, according to Lee, is capable of carrying up to 30 kilograms and flying up to 1.5 kilometers. The capture drone is equipped with a net system designed to intercept and capture enemy drones.

“These are not yet in use by the military, but they are scheduled to be deployed in the near future,” Lee said. “For the transport drone, the maximum weight it can carry is 30 kg. As to what it can transport, anything,” he added.

The use of drones has become a crucial factor in the ongoing wars in Europe and the Middle East.

South Korea is rapidly expanding its drone capabilities, including the training of 500,000 drone warriors. Its current efforts involve co-producing Gray Eagle STOL drones with Hanwha Aerospace, operating RQ-4s, and developing high-altitude and loyal wingman drones.

Last month, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered the expansion of the country’s military drone program, calling the development of core technologies and artificial intelligence a “top priority” for modernizing the DPRK’s armed forces.

In a visit to the Unmanned Aeronautical Technology Complex, Kim urged increased drone production capacity. Last year, North Korea threatened to launch military strikes against South Korea, accusing them of using drones to drop anti-regime leaflets over Pyongyang.
