The Royal Thai Army (RTA) is displaying its Automatic Truck Mounted Gun (ATGM) at the indoor display. The RTA operates 18 of these guns which are essentially Elbit Systems’ ATMOS 155mm/52 caliber truck-mounted howitzers. The155mm/52caliberartillerygunsaremounted on a Czechoslovakian Tatra6X6 chassis for Thailand. The ATGMs started arriving in Thailand in 2015.

The RTA currently has three batteries (6 guns per battery), of the ATGMs in service. An additional requirement for another three batteries of the ATGM has been indicated. The Royal Thai Marine Corps (RTMC) will also operate six such systems, following orders for the SPH in 2018. Deliveries are to conclude next year.

Speaking to Daily News, a Thai official said that greater number of such Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) would be needed to replace older towed guns. The ATGM artillery guns are being produced in Thailand and according to the official, 70 per cent of the truck-mounted howitzers are assembled in Thailand. The production rate is approximately six guns per year. Elbit Systems is undertaking a Transfer of Technology (ToT) as part of the programme.

The protected cabin of the ATMOS is designed for a crew of 2-6 personnel, a driver, a commander, and an additional three to four crew members. The SPH can engage targets ranges exceeding 40km with Explosive Extended-Range Full-Bore projectile with the Base Burn Unit (ERFB-BB) ammunition and suitable propelling charge. On board containers store a minimum of 18 rounds, including projectiles, propellants and fuzes.
