RTA To Acquire 9 Additional UH-60A Blackhawk Helicopters

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jun 3, 2022 - : 7:23 pm

The Royal Thai Army (RTA) recently announced its plan to acquire nine refurbished UH-60A Blackhawk utility helicopters and related equipment from the United States for USD93.3 million. The plan also includes building two hangars to house these helicopters.

The RTA Aviation Center has 15 UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters of different types in its inventory. In addition to 9 UH-60L and 3 UH-60M that were procured new from Sikorsky Helicopters, there are also 3 refurbished UH-60A that were delivered in 2020.

All of the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters of the RTA Aviation Center are operated by the 9th Aviation Battalion based in the Lopburi province. If this plan materialized, the unit will operate 24 UH-60 helicopters from 33 that the RTA has envisioned acquiring.

The planned acquisition of nine UH-60A Blackhawk helicopters will likely also come from the United States Army’s Excess Defense Article (EDA) stocks similar to the current 3 UH-60A in RTA’s inventory.

The UH-60A Blackhawk is the first production model of the type that was produced by Sikorsky Helicopters from 1977 to 1989. Powered by two 1622 shp (1,210 kW) T700-GE-700 turboshaft engines, the A version has a maximum speed of around 280 km/h and a maximum range of about 520 km. Manned by three crews, the helicopter can carry up to 11 fully-armed troops or up to 3,630 kg of external load.

Other than Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, and the Philippines are also among the UH-60/S-70 Blackhawk operators in the Southeast Asia region.
