JSC Rosoboronexport (a subsidiary of the Rostec state corporation) is showcasing a variety of combat, combat-reconnaissance, and transport-assault helicopters, at the ongoing exhibition.
These new helicopters have been extensively used during the recent counter-terror operations in Syria.
“Russian-made combat and military transport helicopters have shown excellent results during the counter-terrorism operations in Syria. High combat effectiveness, general reliability under rough conditions, and the ability to be effectively used in mountain and sandy types of terrain are among the distinctive features of these rotary-wing platforms,” a Rosoboronexport official informs.
The resultant combat experience gained has led to Russian industry now upgrading their military helicopters with the knowledge obtained. Three main helicopter types are on offer to the Kazakhstan military – The Mi-35M combat helicopter belongs to the Mi-24/35 ‘Hind’ family. The gun- ship’s armament suite comprises up to eight Shturm or Ataka anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), up to 80 S-8-family non-guided rockets, a gun mount with a GSh-23L 23 mm twin-barrel automatic cannon, and various gun/machinegun pods. The useful payload of this attack helicopter which can also carry troop is 2,400 kg and the crew cabin, engines, main rotor transmission, and hydraulic unit are protected by armour plates. With its ability to transport up to eight equipped soldiers, the Mi-35M is well suited for counter-insurgency (COIN) and counter-drug missions, etc.
Recent operations in Syria and Iraq have demonstrated the ability of the Mi-28NE Night Hunter to operate in a combat environment. The Mi-28NE can carry up to 16 Ataka-family ATGMs, up to four Igla-S short-range air-to-air missiles, up to 80 S-8 family rockets, and a 30 mm chin-mounted automatic cannon.
The Mi-28NEs well-integrated and proven self-protection system comprises of a modern countermeasure system, which protects against anti-aircraft missiles fitted with heat seekers and extensive armour protection around the helicopter`s crew cabin and critically important components.
The Mi-28NE is very well suited to rough field operations and the Klimov VK-2500-02 turboshaft engines with a power output of 2,500 hp each, are a vital component of the Mi-28NE which has the ability to be stored out of hangars without loss of service life. The helicopter can carry out search-and-rescue operations as it also has a technical compartment accommodating up to two service- men.
The Mi-8AMTSh transport-assault helicopter (export variant – Mi-171Sh) has also been extensively used during operations in Syria and is an effective COIN asset, like the Mi-35M. The Mi-171Sh can carry 37 armed servicemen with individual equipment or light multipurpose automobiles (for instance, all-terrain vehicles and buggies) armed with machine guns and grenade launchers. The helicopters crew cabin, engines, main rotor trans- mission, and hydraulic unit feature heavy armour protection, in addition to protected fuel tanks. The latest version is the Mi-171Sh-VN transport-assault helicopter, which was unveiled in 2017 and features a glass cockpit, applique armor protection of the main compartment, two door-mounted Kord 12.7 mm heavy machineguns, two forward-looking Kords mounted above stub wings, and a guided missile system.
The Mi-171Sh-VN has been designed for use by Special Forces and can undertake night flying as well.
