The South Korean MoD on Tuesday, April 30, approved plans to build three Aegis destroyers armed with ballistic-missile interceptors worth KRW3.9 trillion ($US 3.3 billion). The Block 10 version of the Lockheed Martin’s Aegis system heralds a new era in detection and tracking as it can simultaneously track and defend against missiles, aircraft and enemy ships.
The plan also includes upgrading submarines – equipped with their own launchers for land-attack missiles – to enhance the military’s operational capabilities, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said to local media. The Jangbogo Ⅲ project refers to building three 3,450-ton submarines by 2028 that will be equipped with ballistic missile launchers, under a budget of 3.4 billion won, according to the DAPA.
The new ships could help Seoul’s navy to expand beyond its current, largely coastal mission. The main threat to South Korea is North Korea, specifically the North’s huge force of artillery that in wartime quickly could demolish Seoul and endanger millions of people.
The South Korean navy in 2019 operates 68 major warships including 16 submarines, 12 destroyers, 13 frigates, 13 corvettes and 14 amphibious warfare ships. The fleet also includes scores of patrol boats, mine-warfare vessels and auxiliaries.
