Indonesia is one of the newest operators of the Austrian-made Schiebel Camcopter S-100. The Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Air System (UAS) is being used to secure Indonesian borders. The Schiebel Camcopter S-100 has been in service with the Indonesian Navy for less than two years and is used to monitor and secure the country’s maritime borders including securing maritime natural resources.

The S-100 is able to carry various payloads, such as electro-optic and infrared sensor. The high-definition payload imagery can be transmitted to the control station in real time. The UAS can also potentially carry two Lightweight Multirole Missile (LLM) missiles weighing 13 kg and a warhead weight of 3 kg.

The S-100 affords the Indonesian Navy with the unique capability of operating a UAS that requires no prepared area or supporting equipment to enable launch and recovery. Able to operate by day and by night, under adverse weather conditions, the S-100 can operate with a beyond line-of-sight capability out to 200 km, over land and sea. In addition to its standard GPS waypoint or manual navigation, the S-100 can successfully operate in environments where GPS is not available, with missions planned and controlled via a simple point-and-click graphical user interface

The Austrian’s UAS’ robust carbon fiber and titanium fuselage has resulted in a reputation for reliability, with the ability to operate up to a service ceiling of 18,000 ft. The Camcopter S-100, in a typical configuration can carry a 34-kg payload for up to 10 hours.
