SIA Opens One-Way Changi Transit for Australia, NZ

: Jun 12, 2020 - : 4:42 am

Singapore Airlines has announced a new ‘one-way transit’ system which will allow passengers travelling out of selected cities in Australia and New Zealand to transit through Changi Airport onto any flight operated by the Singapore Airlines, SilkAir and Scoot.

“Passengers will not be able to transit from other points in the SIA Group network through Singapore into these cities,” said the national carrier.

The cities in Australia include Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth (via Scoot) and Sydney, while the New Zealand cities are Auckland and Christchurch.

Use of the transit system will be subject to a number of requirements and restrictions such as connections must be no longer than 48 hours, passengers can only travel on Singapore Airlines, SilkAir or Scoot flights both into and out of Singapore and they must meet all departing and arriving government requirements and restrictions.

Singapore Airlines regional vice president for the south west Pacific region Philip Goh welcomed the opening of even a one-way transit channel as “a small but welcome step in our journey towards recovery”, however cautioned that the transit arrangement is in no way a resumption of normal international travel.

“The decision to allow customers travelling from Australia and New Zealand to destinations in the current SIA Group network via transiting through Singapore’s Changi Airport is a small but welcome step in our journey towards recovery,” he said.

“It is important to remember that government travel restrictions in Australia and New Zealand as well as in many other countries remain in place, and opening of limited one-way transit is not a sign that international travel is back to normal.”

SIA said that transit and non-transit passengers will be kept apart at Changi Airport.

“This is to ensure the health and safety of our customers and staff,” said the airline.

When passengers transit through Changi Airport, they will be given a wristband indicating their access to the designated transit holding area.
