thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has signed a contract with Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) for the construction of two additional Type 218SG submarines. The agreement builds on the longstanding partnership between the German shipbuilder and Singapore and brings the total number of submarines ordered by the Southeast Asian nation to six. This latest deal contributes to thyssenkrupp Marine Systems' growing order book, which the company says now stands at approximately €16 billion.
“The order expansion underscores the generally positive market situation in naval shipbuilding and gives us the opportunity to further expand our very well-filled order book,” said Oliver Burkhard, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. “We are also proud that Singapore has once again placed its trust in us, as our partnership goes far beyond the production of submarines. We feel deeply connected to the country and contribute to the security and defense capabilities of our customer's country with our products.”
Despite already high levels of utilisation at its facilities in Germany—expected to continue into the 2040s—thyssenkrupp Marine Systems stated that the new Singapore order can be accommodated within its existing production capacity. The company recently secured several other large-scale contracts, including four additional Type 212CD submarines for the German Navy, the Polarstern II research icebreaker, and initial funding for the new F127 frigate programme.
The two additional Type 218SG submarines will meet what the company described as the highest technical requirements. These submarines are equipped with air-independent propulsion, allowing for extended submerged operations, and are designed with a focus on reduced acoustic and radar signatures. Following the previously named vessels “Invincible”, “Impeccable”, “Illustrious”, and “Inimitable”, this latest order will bring the Republic of Singapore Navy’s fleet of Type 218SG submarines to six.
