A Philippine Air Force (PAF) Vietnam-era aircraft crashed on Tuesday while on a relief mission in the southern Philippines during the onslaught of Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi), killing everyone on board.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Eastern Mindanao Command confirmed that six bodies were retrieved shortly past 9 p.m. on Tuesday night from the crash site in Loreto, Agusan del Sur, adding that “the identities of the fatalities are being withheld pending notification of their respective families.”
Col. Ma Christina Basco, spokesperson for the PAF, said the UH-1H was part of a flight of four helicopters deployed from Davao to Butuan to carry out a Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) mission.
She said the PAF lost communication with the Super Huey near the vicinity of the Philippine Army’s 60th Infantry Battalion, prompting the immediate launch of a search and rescue operation.
“The search and rescue operations have led to the recovery of six bodies believed to be those of the pilot and crew members of the ill-fated Super Huey helicopter,” Eastmincom said in a statement.
The incident was the latest in the history of Philippine military air disasters.
In March this year, an FA-50 fighter of the Air Force crashed during an anti-insurgency mission in Bukidnon, killing two pilots.
In 2023, a Marchetti SF-260 attack aircraft crashed near Manila while on a training flight, killing the two people on board.
In June 2021, an S-70i Black Hawk chopper went down during a training mission near the Crow Valley in Capas, a town in northern Pampanga province, about 100 km (62 miles) north of the capital Manila, killing all six onboard.
The worst military air disaster happened in July 2021 when a Philippine Air Force Lockheed-made transport plane crashed in the southern Philippines province of Sulu, killing 50 people.
