SkyFive and Akses Prima Indonesia (API) have announced a partnership to introduce an Air-to-Ground (A2G) inflight connectivity network in Indonesia, according to SkyFive's press release on Tuesday (Mar. 4). The collaboration aims to improve internet access for airline passengers in one of the largest and fastest-growing aviation markets in the world.
The A2G network will be implemented in stages, beginning with a high-traffic domestic route before expanding to cover Indonesian airspace more broadly. Advances in long-range A2G technology will also allow coverage across the country’s archipelago, including areas separated by large stretches of water. API is leading the rollout of the service and is engaging with major airlines to ensure availability for passengers. The first aircraft is expected to come online in 2025.
Aswan Hamonangan, Chief Executive Officer of Akses Prima Indonesia said: “At Akses Prima, we are dedicated to revolutionizing connectivity. Our collaboration with SkyFive enables us to deploy state-of-the-art technology that will significantly enhance passenger experience and set new standards in inflight communication across the region.”
Thorsten Robrecht, Chief Executive Officer of SkyFive said: “We are excited to bring A2G to the fast-growing airline market in Asia-Pacific with such an experienced and focused partner. Indonesia, with its dense airspace and digitally savvy population that expects to be connected everywhere, is an ideal area for our solution from both a technical and a commercial perspective.”
The network in Indonesia will be comparable in scale to around two-thirds of the European Aviation Network and will expand SkyFive’s global A2G coverage. The system is based on open standards, ensuring compatibility with other SkyFive A2G networks worldwide.
SkyFive specialises in inflight connectivity using A2G technology, providing broadband services for passengers and enabling the real-time transfer of operational aircraft data. The company was founded in 2019 as a spin-off from Nokia and is headquartered in Munich, Germany, with research and service facilities in key aviation markets.
Akses Prima Indonesia (API), a subsidiary of TRG Investama, was established in 2013 and provides telecommunications solutions across enterprise, residential, and government sectors.
