The Sri Lankan Navy Ship (SLNS) Samudara is one of the many naval vessels participating at the ongoing IMDEX. The vessel set sail on 27 April from the Port of Colombo to Changi, Singapore.
The Sri Lanka Navy is tasked with protecting the island nation’s marine resources within its exclusive economic zone, an area seven times larger than the country's land mass.
As per a Sri Lanka Navy spokesperson, “Taking part in such naval and maritime defence events will open new avenues to the Sri Lanka Navy to build inter-operability with regional and extra-regional partners, exchange best practices and procedures in maritime operations, and identify new challenges in the maritime domain.” The Sri Lanka Navy has acquired three vessels, namely SLNS 'Samudura' (P 621), SLNS 'Gajabahu' (P 626), and SLNS 'Vijayabahu' (P 627), from the U.S. Coast Guard as part of its fleet expansion.
Later this year, the SLN is slated to receive the EX-U.S. Coast Guard Medium Endurance Cutter USCGC Decisive after undergoing necessary modernization to meet operational requirements.
The ships are being used to effectively carry out operations, both within Sri Lanka's maritime borders and in international waters. The ships help the service address illegal activities, including non-traditional maritime threats, and to safeguard freedom of navigation.
