The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) is set to significantly expand its inventory of precision-guided munitions following the United States government's approval of a major sale of GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs Increment I (SDB I). The acquisition, valued at approximately US$111.8 million, underscores Seoul’s continued drive to modernise its air combat capabilities and maintain a credible deterrent against evolving threats on the Korean Peninsula.
This latest procurement involves an additional 624 rounds of the GBU-39/B SDB I, a 250-pound class precision glide bomb capable of striking high-value targets with minimal collateral damage. These munitions will be integrated into the ROKAF’s existing fleet, which includes the F-15K Slam Eagle, KF-16, and the stealthy F-35A Lightning II. By increasing the loadout capacity of these fighters, South Korea aims to enhance its ability to neutralise key hostile assets, such as hardened artillery sites and command centres, which remain a primary concern given the density of conventional threats along the Demilitarised Zone.
According to a notification delivered by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 5 December 2025, the US State Department has approved the Foreign Military Sale (FMS). The agency clarified that this request complements a previously implemented case for 387 SDB-Is, bringing the total package to over 1,000 units. The estimated total cost of US$111.8 million covers the munitions, associated aircraft components, spares, explosive charges, and technical logistics support. Boeing, based in Arlington, Virginia, has been named as the principal contractor for the programme.
The sale comes at a critical juncture for security in the Asia-Pacific region. As North Korea continues to advance its missile and nuclear programmes, the ROKAF has placed a premium on "Kill Chain" capabilities—the ability to detect and destroy imminent threats before they are launched. The GBU-39/B is particularly suited for this role due to its extended standoff range of more than 40 nautical miles (74 kilometres), allowing South Korean pilots to engage targets from outside the reach of many enemy air defence systems.
Furthermore, the acquisition reinforces the strategic interoperability between the ROK Armed Forces and the United States Indo-Pacific Command. The DSCA statement highlighted that the sale would "improve the security of a major ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific region." By standardising munitions, allied forces can streamline logistics and conduct more effective joint operations during potential contingencies.
The GBU-39/B SDB I represents a paradigm shift in aerial warfare, moving away from large, heavy ordinance towards smaller, smarter weapons. Its compact size allows a fighter jet to carry four SDBs in place of a single 2,000-pound bomb using the BRU-61/A carriage system. This "quad-pack" capability effectively quadruples the number of targets a single aircraft can engage per sortie, a crucial force multiplier for the ROKAF given the sheer volume of targets it might face in a high-intensity conflict.
Guided by an advanced anti-jam Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS), the SDB I delivers precision accuracy even in adverse weather conditions. Its penetrating blast-fragmentation warhead is designed to breach more than three feet of steel-reinforced concrete, making it highly effective against the hardened shelters and tunnels frequently utilised by adversaries in the region.
