The potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Republic of Korea of AGM-65G2 Maverick tactical missiles and associated equipment worth an estimated US$34 million has was recently cleared by the U.S. State Department. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) formally notified Congress of the proposed sale this October.

South Korea has sought the purchase of 44 AGM-65G2 Maverick missiles which are manufactured by Raytheon Technologies.  The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) already operates variants of the Maverick missile, and integration of the new systems is expected to be seamless. The AGM-65 Maverick is a tactical, air-to-surface guided missile designed for close air support, interdiction and defense suppression mission. It provides stand-off capability and high probability of strike against a wide range of tactical targets, including armour, air defences, ships, transportation equipment and fuel storage facilities. As many as six Mavericks can be carried by an F-16 or F-15, usually in three round underwing clusters, allowing the pilot to engage several targets on one mission.

According to the DSCA, the proposed sale aligns with U.S. foreign policy and security objectives by strengthening the defensive capabilities of a key Indo-Pacific ally. Maverick air-to-ground missiles, are widely used by U.S. and allied forces, and fill further strengthen the ROKAF’s precision strike and deterrence capabilities against regional threats while ensuring continued interoperability with U.S. forces.
