The fifth edition of Seoul International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition (ADEX 2021), which opens today at Seoul Airport near the South Korean capital, provides South Korean indigenous defence industry an ideal global platform to highlight its growing might.   While much of the spotlight at the fastest growing aerospace and defence shows in the Asia Pacific is likely to be on KF-21 Boramae (Young Hawk), South Korea’s developmental ‘4.5 generation’ fighter that was unveiled in April this year. The country will also showcase various unmanned military systems for aerial, ground and maritime operations that are produced domestically. With the event taking place in the backdrop of South Korea becoming the sixth biggest exporter of arms in 2020, domestic companies will be eager to maximise their chances of further expanding their global reach.

Apart from products and capabilities of local firms, ADEX 2021 will also have cutting-edge military hardware from international companies, many of them reputed and some striving to make their mark in the sector. Given the close military ties between the two countries and the fact that South Korea is a major importer of U.S. arms, a large contingent of U.S. companies, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman will be showing latest technologies and capabilities.

A possible development at the at the biennial event is an update on Republic of Korea Air Force’s (RoKAF) plans to buy another 40 Lockheed Martin-built F-35s. As many as 440 companies from 28 countries are exhibiting their products at the event that will be attended by about 300 top military and defense officials, including defense ministers, from 45 countries. With travel restrictions still in place due to the pandemic, international participation at the event has been impacted, but there is enough quality on display to make up for that. To ensure the smooth conduct of the event and the safety of participants, the event organizers have strict anti-virus measures in place, including providing entry to the exhibition site only to those who are fully vaccinated or have negative COVID-19 tests.
