Rescuers have recovered the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) of Sriwijaya Air’s flight SJ-182, which crashed shortly after take off into the Java Sea on Saturday.

The search efforts will now focus on locating and recovering the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). The team will also search for the bodies of the victims and try to recover all the fragments of the aircraft.

The FDR, which was recovered at 16:20 Western Indonesia Time, has been brought ashore. The air crash investigator team from the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) will analyze its content to determine the cause of the disaster.

The FDR was recovered after a search involving more than 3600 personnel and 54 rescue vessels from a depth of around 23 meters, at a point within a 222-square-nautical mile search area between Laki and Lancang islands.

“The Navy Chief of Staff has reported that the FDR has been recovered,” said Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, the commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. “They have also  recovered two underwater acoustic beacons. That means the cockpit voice recorder has to be found without the help of said beacons. ”

The investigation process will begin after the KNKT finishes downloading the data contained within the FDR.  “(We ask for) prayers from the (Indonesian) people so that the downloading process from the FDR, which we predict will take between two to five days, will be successful and will reveal the mysteries of what has caused this disaster,” said a Soerjanto Tjahjono,  Chairman of KNKT.

Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air’s Boeing 737-500 had crashed into the sea just North of Jakarta four minutes after take off.  The plane, which was carried 62 people,  lost its altitude from 10,000 feet. The plane, with flight code SJ-182, was headed for Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province, from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
