Danish defence and aerospace company Terma has introduced the SCANTER Sphera, a new 3D radar system developed for counter-drone operations, border surveillance, and the protection of critical infrastructure. The system is designed to provide continuous 360-degree situational awareness and leverages artificial intelligence to classify airborne threats, particularly unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
According to Terma, the SCANTER Sphera builds upon its experience with the SCANTER 5000 and 6000 radar families, which have been widely used for detecting small, fast-moving objects in both land and maritime environments. The new system adds three-dimensional coverage and mobility, incorporating AI-enabled target classification to enhance response accuracy and speed.
“SCANTER Sphera represents a strategic leap in our ability to detect and respond to drone threats,” said Thomas Blom, Senior Vice President, Surveillance & Mission Systems at Terma. “Our customers need faster classification, wider coverage, and dependable performance in any environment. SCANTER Sphera is built for precisely that—giving operators the time and insight to make the right decisions when seconds count.”
The system offers both horizontal and vertical detection in a compact sensor unit. It is described as suitable for both fixed and redeployable use, with potential applications including military installations, national borders, and energy infrastructure. Its form factor and ruggedised construction allow deployment in remote or challenging conditions, including coastal areas and complex terrain.
In line with growing demands for infrastructure protection, Terma says the radar is intended to provide early warning and threat discrimination in environments where conventional sensors may struggle. The radar employs AI to identify drones not only based on size or shape but through movement analysis using micro-Doppler effects and other behavioural patterns. This approach aims to reduce false alarms in cluttered settings.
SCANTER Sphera’s software-defined architecture allows for updates to both radar functions and AI models through remote connections, aiming to extend system longevity and maintain relevance as threat types evolve. The radar can be operated as a standalone unit, integrated with Terma’s own visual interface, or deployed within larger multi-sensor counter-UAS systems.
Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Terma, stated: “The launch of SCANTER Sphera is a clear reflection of Terma’s strategic commitment to advancing drone and counter-drone capabilities. We are investing in innovation that addresses the rapidly changing threat landscape and strengthens our position as a trusted partner in defense and security. SCANTER Sphera is only the beginning of what we have planned in this critical domain building on the strong Terma legacy.”
