Terma’s MASE System on RNLAF NH90 Helicopters Ready for Use

: Jun 20, 2019 - : 5:39 am

Terma has announced that the aircraft survivability equipment installed on NH90 aircraft of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) is ready for use. The system will protect the aircraft from IR seeking missiles. A Terma study in 2012 pointed out that the Modular Aircraft Survivability Equipment (MASE) system is the preferred choice to protect the aircraft. The MASE installation is based on the proven modular Aircraft Survivability Equipment concept consisting of the Terma ALQ-213 EW controller, a modular self-protection Pod equipped with Hensoldt MILDS-F Missile Warning System, and the latest generation Advanced Countermeasures Dispenser System from Terma. The architecture of the system is modularized, thereby making future growth, such as Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) or new sensors, possible. While the addition of RF detection is in the pipeline, Terma has been contracted for the installation of Hostile Fire Indication. The MASE Pod is mounted on a dedicated carrier for optimum 360 degrees threat detection and countermeasures dispensing, without compromising other NH90 capabilities. Control and operation of the system is provided through the Electronic Warfare Management System, ALQ-213. The MASE concept has previously proven its effectiveness on other aircraft types as well. The modularity of the MASE pod has enabled tailoring for many helicopter platforms, including AH-64D, EH101, Mi-17, Mi-24, and AS 550 Fennec.
