Thailand’s plan to digitise its army is moving ahead, with Leonardo DRS set to equip the Royal Thai Army’s new Stryker combat vehicles with advanced command-and-control systems. The project, worth just over USD 7 million, was cleared under a US Government Grant Assistance programme earlier this year.
Once work begins, the system will form the digital backbone of the army’s new vehicles, giving commanders a clearer view of what’s happening across the battlefield. The aim is to connect soldiers, vehicles and command units into one network, allowing faster decisions and fewer blind spots.
A Step Towards Networked Operations
Leonardo’s Battle Management System, or BMS, is not new to frontline use. The same type of equipment has already been deployed by the US and UK forces. Built for rough conditions, it combines rugged computers, tactical displays and secure communications tools that allow units to share data in real time.
Although the integration has not yet started, officials say the plan marks a major shift in how the Thai Army operates. Once in service, the BMS will let field commanders track friendly forces, manage logistics and even coordinate medical evacuation on a single digital map.
Local Industry in the Loop
Leonardo DRS will work with Thai defence manufacturer Chaiseri Defense, which is expected to handle installation and training once the systems arrive. That partnership is important as it fits with Thailand’s goal of expanding its local defence capability and maintaining key systems at home rather than sending them abroad for support.
The approach also ensures that the technology can be updated over time, with Chaiseri playing a larger role in maintenance and future upgrades. For the Royal Thai Army, it’s a move towards greater self-reliance and technical confidence.
Proven System with NATO Pedigree
Leonardo DRS has a long track record in this area. It’s the main supplier of ruggedised computers and displays to both the US Army and the UK Ministry of Defence. Over the years, it has built and delivered more than 200,000 such systems, many of which are in daily service on armoured vehicles.
The version headed to Thailand is based on the company’s Mounted Family of Computer Systems (MFoCS), which evolved from the US Army’s Blue Force Tracking and Force XXI Battle Command programmes. These platforms help link troops and machines across land, air and sea, a model many nations are now adopting as they move towards networkcentric warfare.
Better awareness, faster response
The battle management system does more than provide situational awareness. It streamlines how information is shared, helping units respond faster to changing conditions. It can also cut the risk of friendly fire incidents by showing all friendly positions at once and linking directly to sensors and communications gear.
In practice, that means a commander can see the status of nearby units, supply routes or medical support without needing multiple radio channels or paper maps. In modern, high-speed combat, that kind of visibility can make a big difference.
Regional Momentum
Across Southeast Asia, militaries are investing heavily in digital command systems and data-driven operations. For Thailand, the decision to adopt Leonardo’s C4I solution signals a clear intent to move in that direction. It also reinforces its existing defence ties with both the US and European partners.
Analysts see this as part of a wider trend where regional forces are building layered command networks to handle increasingly complex missions, from border security to joint operations with allies.
Laying the groundwork
Preparations for the programme are still under way. Once the systems are delivered, Leonardo and Chaiseri are expected to start integration and testing on the new Strykers.
For Leonardo, the project strengthens its footprint in Asia, where demand for rugged computing and secure network systems continues to grow. For Thailand, it marks another step in building a modern, connected army capable of operating in a digital battlespace.
