Thales and UK-based Autonomous Devices have announced a partnership to jointly develop the EW-UAS1, a new drone-based electronic warfare (EW) solution designed to counter modern threats across land and naval operations.
The turnkey system will combine Thales’ expertise in electronic warfare command-and-control integration with Autonomous Devices’ agile drone platform, creating a solution certified for operations in both civil and military airspace. The collaboration builds on a series of joint projects between the two companies.
Driven by lessons from recent conflicts, the EW-UAS1 is designed to provide armed forces with a long-endurance, reusable platform capable of deploying electronic warfare payloads rapidly and flexibly. The system will enable both defensive and offensive EW missions, from jamming adversary radars to conducting passive detection and surveillance.
“The drone-based electronic warfare solution developed by Thales and Autonomous Devices is a technological game-changer for the armed forces, providing a reliable passive capability to counter modern threats while ensuring long-range protection around their strategic assets,” said Marie Gayrel, Vice-President for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance at Thales.
“The integration of these technologies in a turnkey solution promises to unlock EW capabilities well beyond the state of the art, providing an effective counter to rapidly-evolving threats,” said Ken Wahren, CEO of Autonomous Devices.
The EW-UAS1 will play a key role in naval defense, where its speed and agility can be used to detect incoming anti-ship missiles and trigger soft-kill electronic countermeasures, boosting ship survivability while conserving munitions. On land, it will enhance the protection of sensitive assets by conducting jamming missions that disrupt enemy radar surveillance and targeting systems.
With the ability to detect, jam, or manipulate radar emissions, the drone can employ deception tactics to mislead enemy operators, divert missiles off-course, and shield critical assets. Its mobility allows it to extend detection coverage, anticipate threats, and reposition rapidly in complex theaters of operation.
