Thales Expands Malaysian Defence Industrial Footprint

Thales Expands Tactical Communications In Malaysia

Thales has significantly bolstered its industrial presence in Southeast Asia following a series of strategic agreements announced at the recent DSA and NATSEC Asia 2026 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

The French technology giant confirmed it will establish a local assembly line for its new-generation SYNAPS software-defined radios in Segamat, Johor, through a partnership with Advanced Defence Systems. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s National Defence Industry Policy launched in January 2026, which aims to achieve a self-reliant and high-value domestic defence sector by the year 2030. The move marks a pivot towards deeper technological transfer and local content development within the regional aerospace and defence supply chain.

The expansion involves multiple branches of the Malaysian Armed Forces and addresses critical modernisation requirements for ground and air platforms. Under the Self-Propelled Howitzer programme, Thales will supply more than 100 advanced radios, including the VHF 9315, HF XL, and the debut of SYNAPS-H and SquadNet systems in the Malaysian market. Furthermore, the company will extend its tactical communication expertise to the Royal Malaysian Air Force by providing 16 TRA 6036 airborne radios for helicopter platforms in collaboration with Weststar. These developments ensure that Malaysian forces maintain a high degree of operational readiness and interoperability in increasingly complex combat environments.

Local Assembly Line

The Johor-based assembly line represents a shift from traditional procurement to a model focused on industrial sovereignty. Local engineers and technicians will handle the assembly of over 1,000 SYNAPS radios over the next six years, specifically tailored to the requirements of Malaysian end-users. By embedding these building blocks of advanced communication technology within the local ecosystem, Malaysia reduces its reliance on direct imports and strengthens its position as a regional hub for high-tech defence manufacturing. This move is particularly significant as Thales already maintains over 11,000 radios currently in service with the Malaysian Army, providing a massive foundation for life-cycle support and future upgrades.

In addition to ground-based communications, Thales is integrating its Battlefield Management Systems into the AV4 armoured vehicle programme to modernise the nation's light armoured fleet. The introduction of airborne radios for the Royal Malaysian Air Force marks a milestone for the company’s first deployment of such technology in the country, facilitating secure and reliable communication between different military branches. As regional security dynamics evolve, the ability to coordinate across land and air domains becomes a vital component of national strategy.

Bilateral Cooperation

Florian Riou, Country Director for Thales in Malaysia, emphasised the long-standing nature of this bilateral cooperation during the signing ceremony. He noted that the company has partnered with Malaysian defence for over 40 years and expressed pride in the growth of their radio communications credentials. Riou stated that "Being able to deepen our industrial footprint with local assembly is testament to the trust that the Malaysian authorities and end-users have in our products". He further remarked that "With the rise in asymmetric threats, interoperability for missions in the sky or on land is critical".

Strengthening Local Industrial Footprint

The partnership with Advanced Defence Systems ensures that the transfer of expertise goes beyond simple assembly. It involves the integration of complex software-defined architectures that allow radios to be updated with new waveforms as threats change. This creates a sustainable industrial model where the Malaysian workforce gains exposure to Artificial Intelligence and cybersecurity protocols embedded within modern tactical hardware. The Segamat facility will serve as a cornerstone for Thales' strategy to localise its global supply chain while meeting the specific sovereignty goals of the Malaysian government.

Modernising Ground Combat Systems

The delivery of over 100 radios for the Self-Propelled Howitzer programme provides the Malaysian Army with a significant leap in battlefield coordination. By combining various frequency bands and the new SquadNet systems, infantry and artillery units can share real-time data with higher speed and security. This digitisation of the battlefield is a primary objective of the Malaysian Army’s modernisation efforts. The Proof-of-Concepts being developed for the AV4 armoured vehicles will further demonstrate how integrated management systems can enhance situational awareness for vehicle commanders in the field.

Enhancing Air Force Interoperability

The agreement with Weststar to equip Royal Malaysian Air Force helicopters with TRA 6036 radios addresses a critical gap in multi-domain operations. Secure airborne communication is essential for search and rescue, transport, and tactical missions where coordination with ground units is mandatory. This first-time deployment of Thales airborne radios in Malaysia signifies a broadening of the technological partnership. It ensures that the Air Force can operate seamlessly within the wider tactical network established by the ground forces, creating a unified communication umbrella for the entire Malaysian Armed Forces.

Driving Regional Strategic Sovereignty

The timing of these agreements reflects a broader trend in the Asia-Pacific region where nations are increasingly demanding domestic manufacturing and technology transfers as part of defence contracts. By aligning with Malaysia's 2030 industrial goals, Thales secures its market position while contributing to the host nation’s economic and technical development. This balanced approach to industrial participation helps maintain regional stability by fostering indigenous capabilities and reducing the logistical complexities associated with maintaining foreign-made equipment over long durations.
