French aerospace and defence group Thales is deepening its role in Malaysia, positioning the country as a strategic hub in Asia Pacific across defence, aviation, cybersecurity, and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sectors.
Thales vice president for Southeast Asia, Nicolas Bouverot, said Malaysia’s evolving defence procurement approach has created opportunities for more sustainable and efficient partnerships while boosting national readiness and self-reliance. He said in a recent report that Malaysia has become a strategically significant market for the company. With a longer-term perspective guiding procurement, the country is in a stronger position to strengthen the capabilities of its armed forces and at the same time enhance resilience.
The company has been present in Malaysia for more than four decades and currently employs over 100 staff at its Kuala Lumpur headquarters. Its role has expanded from being an equipment supplier to a long-term partner supporting air traffic management, defence systems and aviation technologies.
Defence Focus and New Technologies
Malaysia’s emphasis on sovereignty in a complex security environment has driven demand for air and maritime surveillance, as well as cyber resilience. Bouverot noted that the Royal Malaysian Air Force is enhancing its surveillance capabilities through the deployment of Thales’ GM400α radar systems.
In the report, he said that these radars provide early warning and improve decision-making at the tactical level, adding that Malaysia’s priorities align well with Thales’ expertise in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and maritime domain awareness.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has identified AI, data protection and cyber capabilities as national priorities, further reinforcing the relevance of Thales’ offerings.
Building Local Capacity
Thales operates four support centres in Lumut, Kota Kinabalu, Pekan and Kuala Lumpur, providing technical assistance for naval systems, vehicles, communications and integration. These centres are designed to deliver rapid response support while nurturing local technical expertise.
The group is also contributing to talent development through its partnership with the National Defence University of Malaysia and Warwick Manufacturing Group, which has produced more than 40 graduates from a defence technology management programme since 2019.
Thales has been involved in several of Malaysia’s flagship defence projects, including the ground-based air defence system, the AV8 armoured vehicle, and the littoral combat ship programme.
At this year’s Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), Thales signed agreements with Weststar Group to set up a Radar Centre of Excellence and with ADS Sdn Bhd to jointly develop next-generation tactical radios. The company has already supplied over 11,000 radios to the Malaysian Armed Forces.
Expanding into Cybersecurity and Law Enforcement
Following its 2024 acquisition of Imperva Inc, Thales has become one of the largest global providers of cybersecurity solutions. Bouverot said Malaysia’s strengthening of agencies such as the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and CyberSecurity Malaysia presents opportunities for Thales to provide AI-driven security solutions for critical infrastructure.
For the first time, Thales has also engaged directly with the Royal Malaysian Police, securing a Letter of Award with Novatis Resources Sdn Bhd to deliver a Reality-H AW139 Full Flight Simulator.
Future Outlook
Bouverot said the company’s long-term strategy in Malaysia is built around localisation, ensuring advanced technologies are adapted for local requirements while creating jobs and building skills.
This commitment was reinforced with a new contract signed during Anwar’s state visit to France, under which Malaysia will acquire two additional GM400α long-range radars. With four units in total, the Royal Malaysian Air Force will significantly expand its air surveillance coverage. He added that Malaysia and the wider Asia Pacific region can grow their technological capacity faster when they combine proven global expertise with strong local partnerships. This is the path Thales is committed to pursuing.
