The Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) officially received a C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft at Halim Perdana Kusuma airbase in Jakarta today (Jan. 22). This marks the fourth delivery of five Super Hercules aircraft ordered by Indonesia in 2019.
The aircraft took off from Lockheed Martin’s facility at Marietta, Georgia, United States on 16 January 2024 at 09:00 local time. It then made four stops at San Diego, Honolulu, Kwajalein, and Guam before landing in Jakarta on 22 January 2024 at 14:20 Western Indonesia Time after flying a total distance of around 18,000 km.
Following the acceptance ceremony, the new C-130J Super Hercules will remove the temporary US registration of N5105A to be officially inducted into the 31st squadron of the TNI-AU. With the A-1344 tail number, it will join the other three C-130Js which have been previously delivered in February, June, and August 2023.
The C-130J Super Hercules is the latest iteration of the legendary C-130-series aircraft still in production since 1954. The J-version took its first flight in 1999 incorporating new technologies such as new and more powerful Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprop engines, six-bladed composite propellers, digital avionics, Head-Up Displays (HUD) for both pilot and co-pilot, and more.
All these changes resulted in the reduced crew requirement, from five to three, a 40% increase in range, a 21% maximum speed increase, and a 41% shorter take-off distance.
The C-130J Super Hercules has a maximum speed of 670 km/h, with a 644 km/h cruise speed. It has a flight ceiling of 26,000 ft (8,000 meters) and a maximum range of 4,425 km with a 20-ton payload. Aside from cargo, it can also carry up to 128 fully equipped troops or 92 paratroopers.
To date, over 500 C-130J aircraft have been delivered to 26 operators in 22 countries.
