Indonesia will showcase its first domestically developed unmanned submarine (Kapal Selam Otonom – KSOT) during the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) at Monas, Jakarta, on 5 October.
Built by state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia, the vessel was displayed during a parade rehearsal on 3 October, bearing the marking KSOT-008 and PT PAL’s logo. TNI spokesman Major General (Marine) Freddy Ardianzah confirmed that the submarine is among the latest weapon systems to be introduced this year.
PT PAL began construction of the prototype in January 2025. The vessel measures around 15 metres in length, 2.2 metres in beam, and 1.85 metres in draft, with a submerged displacement of about 37 tonnes. It is powered by an electric motor, has a maximum speed of 8 knots, and cruises at 5 knots. At cruising speed, the submarine has an endurance of 18 hours and an operational range of 90 nautical miles.
The KSOT project was first announced at the Indo Defence 2022 exhibition, when PT PAL and Germany’s Diehl Defence signed a cooperation agreement. At that time, PT PAL outlined a larger 25-metre design capable of 12 knots, equipped with artificial intelligence, and remotely monitored from a command centre.
According to PT PAL President Director Kaharuddin Djenod, the development is a mandate from the Ministry of Defence to create an unmanned submarine with significant strike capability. He told a parliamentary hearing in February 2025 that the prototype would be launched before the end of the year.
PT PAL plans to expand the KSOT’s endurance and range to six months and 6,000 nautical miles. The company also intends to develop three variants: a torpedo-launching model capable of carrying two heavyweight torpedoes, a reconnaissance platform, and an expendable “kamikaze” version.
The unmanned submarine will be formally presented at the 80th TNI anniversary parade, alongside other new assets including Turkey’s Atmaca anti-ship missile. Its debut highlights both Indonesia’s naval modernisation programme and the government’s efforts to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing.
