The Trump administration has authorized a significant military transfer of weapon systems to Israel worth around US$3 billion, without a typical congressional review. Deliveries are set to begin next year.
The State Department approved the sale of about 35,500 MK 84 and BLU-117 bombs and 4,000 Predator warheads valued at US $2.04 billion. U.S Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that the decision was made "waiving the congressional review requirements" in order to made enable Israel to defended itself.
The second deal, worth US$675 million, is for five thousand 1,000-pound bombs and matching components to help steer "dumb" bombs. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028. A third notification revealed shipment of D9 bulldozers for a total value of US$295 million .
Israel has asked the U.S for the urgent supply of different weapon systems to be better ready for new rounds of fighting in Gaza and Lebanon as well as a possible attack on Iranian underground nuclear facilities.
The U.S-made weapon systems will be supplied in parallel to a special effort by some major Israeli defence industries to accelerate production. Israel is dealing with a growing shortage of different types of ammunition as the war that broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, continues.
Israeli sources said that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) were accustomed to short wars and therefore the stockpiles of ammunition were too small when it became clear that the war is not going to end soon.
The US maintains an emergency stockpile of various types of ammunition in Israel. Israel has used the stockpiles (by paying and withdrawing weapons) at least twice, in 2006 and 2014, during the conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza, respectively. The country can request permission again to use them. However, most of the stockpile has been transferred by the US to Ukraine to help it in the war against Russia.
The inventory consisted mainly of 155 mm artillery shells and thousands of "iron bombs," which are simply dropped from airplanes so that gravity can do its work. These dumb ammunition do not have sophisticated guidance systems.
Israeli defence industries, mainly Elbit and Rafael have opened new production lines for certain weapon systems . According to Israeli defence sources, the newly approved supply of U.S made weapons will help Israel to '"get better prepared for possible scenarios."
